Why do you keep playing on private servers?

Howdy,

Perhaps this may be a little controversial but I'm interested in the community's feedback on this topic.

Personally, I lost interest in private servers when Blizz released classic, as I saw no point in continuing to play on Elysium (my server of choice back in the day) when there was an official alternative which held up pretty good. Even now, despite the portal pass and wow token shenanigans they've pulled recently, I'd still rather play on official realms.

My question is, aside from expac which have yet to be released on classic, what keeps you interested in playing on private servers if there's an official alternative?

I really like cataclysm and mop - so currently playing on the most populated server of those two choices (whitemane.gg) they just released Firelands and my core group that I lead just killed rag HC (3rd guild on the realm) nothing too crazy to be proud of but It's pretty cool.

I know a few people who play private servers purely just for the unique optimization and custom shit that they have, for example - the 255 fun servers.

Finally, I know a few people who prefer servers with a smaller player base of around 10-50 people more for the "community" aspect rather than anything unique the server has to offer.

interesting, I def didn't think of it that way.

Back then most ppl played to avoid paying a subscription or simply because there wasn't any other way to play older xpacs.

It's a hobby and good practice to work with the emulation of World of Warcraft. Plus, if you like writing short stories then custom quest lines may be something you enjoy. I've spent countless hours creating custom quest lines with stories of love, betrayal, friendships, and more.

I like seeing others' creativity come out in custom content. That's a big reason I play private servers. I really miss old Ani-WoW from 2007 - 2008. The RP was always active. I've not experienced anything like it in retail. The closest thing was Gilneas RP, but they died out quickly. I really miss the RP aspect of WoW. Blizzlike and high rates are server types I don't much enjoy, I'd just assume to play retail which I do.

We need a good RP server, nothing instanced but just open world. The more separation the more limited RP you will have. It's really sad.

People used excuse of why they play on private servers because classic, wotlk and so on didnt exist, nowdays when its out people still play private, why? Because they are mostly kids, or dont have cash to pay it monthly...

I personally play on wotlk classic on original, prefer it day and night cause i know my proggress will stay there for sure, and on the day i decide to sell it i will make good cash on it, so far i am 200 listed with achievments in world... big collector. I dislike private servers as they cant offer you full quality, and 100% safety that blizzard them self can

Well, there are some servers that are professionally hosted. They offer close to Blizzard standards in terms of gameplay and development. Blizzard isn't 100% guaranteed to be here tomorrow. We've seen WoW shut down in some regions before. It can happen with private servers and it can happen with Blizzard's official servers.

Never been too into RP but I remember playing on Gilneas for a while, would be nice to have smth similar. So the added value of private servers would be custom content :HYPERS:

Back in the day I tried starting a mod project for a Star Wars Galaxies successor but sadly couldn't find enough people to get it done, but learned a lot on WoW Modding and it was fun as hell for sure :AYAYA:

Without a form of phasing/instance on your RP server you can't control who you RP with which means any weirdo, 8 year old, mary sue, or perv can come grief your RP.

Without phasing/instance you can't let people build, and that's the big appeal, letting people build their own stuff using the wow assets.

That all has its place, for sure.

There will always be potential griefing, but that's why there is the ability to ignore and tools to address bad actors. I have never tried building with rp servers before. It sounds really neat. I am against phasing because I like walk up RPs, but yes I have been victim to weirdos/erpers so I can see the appeal for phasing. I guess I'm ok with rolling the dice so to speak, but the building for sure would need to be phased. I'd love to see this in action, but sadly I don't think there are any RP servers. I think RP Heaven shut down :(
