With the addition of Copilot & ChatGPT, soon BART and I believe more bots over time... will coding die in the next 5 (or so) years?

I doubt it. ChatGPT shows promise, but it's still significantly underdeveloped when it comes to intimate details. It seems to be very good at structure or basic implementations of concepts. IE it's great at explaining how to do a thing in a certain way "Write a class that implements the decorator pattern in PHP". But it breaks down severely the more involved you try to be. Like "Write a trinitycore script that allows a player to teleport to a custom location by interacting with a game object". You find out very quickly that it gets 50-75% of the way there, and then makes mistakes.

I am still really impressed with the depth and breadth that ChatGPT seems to have. I'm interested to see just how fine-tuned it can get.

Even if ChatGPT and others get way better at this part, programmers and developers will still need to be around to give it the "human" eye. Mistakes will happen, and the human brain is just way better at nuance and truly understanding logic.

I would rather say that all the AIs will help developers to work more efficiently, but replacing them completely may still take a few decades.

Maybe ChatGPT will replace stackoverflow at this point.

I think that's honestly likely, although I wouldn't be surprised if much of stackoverflow (and serverfault, and others) informed GPT3. The code-davinci-002 and code-davinci-003 (beta) models in OpenAI in particular are definitely something to take advantage of, even to get rough ideas of how something is implemented. The model definitely fits the scenario of "I have this issue and have no idea where to start" and Google takes you to someone that did something similar 5 years ago on SO.

Honestly, we could all die in 5 years.
Imagine getting nuked by russia, or wowemu going down and it'll lead to the great depression of emulation again, all possibilities man...

You asked for opinions, and i stated my opinion. Anything and everyone can die, so yes - its a possibility.

Do I think coding will die in the next 5 years? No.

If anything I think that it will help excel the learning mechanics of individuals getting into the field. On the other side you will always have certain people who will blatantly abuse it for their own gain as in take credit for work in their job to make it seem like they know more

Honestly, we are making mad moves in terms of AI and Automation, I'll bet a pretty penny coding will still be alive but the majority of entry-level work will all be automated or some how created by AI.
