So, I have been thinking a lot lately.
How much does it even cost to host a private server for WoW?
I am not talking about an insanely big one, probably one that, at the maximum, can handle 1K players at once.

It wouldn't be very much these days, hosting is insanely cheap compared to 5-10 years ago. You can easily get a good enough server to host up to 1,000 players for less then $75/month depending on where you order from. But you can go cheaper then that, and just expand as you need. You can easily get a server up and going for as little as $10 a month, if you're comfortable running Linux. No need to over pay early on, when you can easily expand when needed.

Yes, can't add anything more to that.

That is insanely cheap!
I thought it would be 100€+ for a small server to be good enough to run with 1k+ people.

Do you have any good hosting providers?

I personally recommend OVH Cloud. Take a look on their kimsufi eco dedicated servers.

Pretty good price/value ratio for starters.

i have a few providers I’d recommend, their services are great for the price you’re paying. They are considered budget providers, but a great starting point

https://contabo.com/en/ (real budget provider, but they’re cheap and a great starting host and expand later on to avoid wasting to much money)

On my phone right now, but I have a few more I can also recommend.

Yeah, those are pretty cheap, but wont there be a problem with Blizz?

Or are these servers in the countries where Blizz can't do shit?

Thank you for the links!
I will look into those, but as I asked Splicho, are there any problems with Blizz if you host on any of these host providers?

If you care about blizz probably eye balling your server, then just go with a russian host/offshore.
But honestly, I doubt blizz would do anything unless you have thousands of players and huge influence, e.x https://en.nostalrius.org/

There is always a risk, but people have ran servers for 5-10+ years with no problems using these providers. Unless your server gets insanely popular, your chances are far to low to even consider it in my opinion.

However, I have and many other people in wow emulation has used these providers to host their servers with no problems for many years.
