Hello, members of WoWEmu.org!

We wanted to take a moment to share some recent changes.

General Chatting Channels Update:

We value the input and preferences of our community members, and we've noticed that the general chatting channels on our discord server have seen a decrease in activity and interest lately. In light of this, we have decided to close these channels temporarily.

Why the Change?

This decision was not taken lightly, but we believe it's essential to maintain an active and engaging environment for our members. This change was implemented due to a noticeable decrease in activity and interest within the general chatting channels.

Will They Come Back?

The good news is that these general chatting channels are not gone forever! We understand that interests and preferences can change over time, and if there is a renewed demand for these channels in the future, we'll be more than happy to bring them back.

What's Next?

We're actively listening to your feedback and suggestions, so if you have any ideas for new channels, events, or improvements you'd like to see on our server, please let us know in the dedicated feedback channels.

Thank you for being a part of our amazing community. We appreciate your understanding and support as we strive to create the best possible experience for all our members.

Stay tuned for exciting updates and events coming soon!

Best regards,
WoWEmu.org Administration

Closing all chat channels in the discord makes the discord extremely unfriendly to new and existing users.

If the site bans new users on signup and the discord can't be spoken in, how/why/when do you expect anyone to get involved or join the community?

I know I don't have a hand in how anything is ran and I respect you guys completely but cutting off all forms of chat on the discord isn't going to benefit anybody. It's just simply the fastest form of support for all of us wither it's with something on the site or anything else WoW Emu related. I think it's also a big staple for building our community though it's small one it helps build friendships between people of different modifying backgrounds. Not sure about others but I feel 100% more confident in asking people advice on Discord rather than posting every question on the website. Disc chat just makes it more personable, not that I'm taking anything away from the Website because I am grateful that we have this as the foundation. Just my take on the situation, either way i'll be along for the ride.

Thank you for voicing your concerns. We genuinely value the feedback of our community members and aim to provide clarity on these decisions.

Our decision, especially regarding the limitations on our Discord channels, has been under consideration for several months. While we initially thought of implementing these changes between May and June, we deferred, believing it wasn't the right time.

To clarify the issue of "new users banned on signup": it's a proactive security measure. We utilize a shared database from CleanTalk, which helps us identify and automatically ban spammy email addresses or those with a questionable reputation. We acknowledge this isn't a foolproof method and are committed to refining it for accuracy. Should anyone feel they've been unjustly banned, we have established mechanisms for resolution. Currently, our Discord serves primarily for staff communication and concise announcements, akin to Twitter's format.

As @splicho aptly highlighted: our decisions are always open to discussion and revision. We pride ourselves on being a community-driven platform. While we steer its direction, we're open to feedback and adjusting our course as needed. We're continuously refining our security measures and remain optimistic about our latest improvements. If anyone faces issues due to these security filters, we encourage reaching out via Discord, our ticketing system, or the forum's email. All channels are actively monitored to ensure seamless communication.

Thank you for your sincere feedback. It's heartening to hear passionate perspectives from community members like you.

The heart of our decision regarding the Discord chat channels is rooted in two core objectives: streamlining our focus and driving community engagement to our forums. We've observed that several Discord channels were not being utilized to their full potential, which led us to believe that consolidating our efforts towards our forums could bring more value to our community.

While Discord offers immediacy and casual interactions, our forums provide a structured environment where discussions can be more organized, easily searchable, and archived for future reference. The forums also allow for a broader range of topics to be addressed and for in-depth discussions to flourish, building a richer knowledge base for WoW Emu enthusiasts of all backgrounds.

Your mention of the importance of Discord in fostering connections is valid. We hope that by redirecting our energies to the forums, we can create a space where both deep discussions and personal connections coexist. We believe this will lead to an enriched community experience, where members can engage in meaningful interactions and also find reliable, lasting resources.

Your dedication to the community is truly appreciated. We hope you'll find the forums to be a valuable platform for collaboration, learning, and building bonds. As we continue to adapt and grow, your feedback remains crucial in guiding our journey. Thank you for your understanding and for being a vital part of our community.

No offense but it's insane to think that killing the discord will "redirect" people to the forum.

Turning off discord won't enhance the website userbase, it will just turn people away. Turning away existing users (like the two replies in this thread) or turning away potential users.

I would never have been able to use the website without the discord and I'm one of your only new signups in weeks.

The type of person who uses a forum (a dying media format in the 2010s, totally dead in the 2020s) won't mind the discord being closed.

The type of person who uses discord (a modern form of social media) will never be nudged into using a forum by closing the discord, you just permanently lose those people as customers.

92.3% of internet users access the internet using a mobile phone (https://explodingtopics.com/blog/mobile-internet-traffic).

Forums/websites are dogshit on phones. You know what's exceptional on a phone? Discord. An app made for phones.

We never said that we want to redirect people from discord to the forums. I just don’t see a reason of having a discord server that is maybe 1% used if even.

And discord wasn’t made for phone in the first place because it’s meant to be a platform for gamers to communicate.

Additionally, wowemu is responsive which supports mobile. So I don’t really get what you are talking about.

Thank you for sharing your perspective, and I completely understand where you're coming from.

The essence of our decision stems from the archival nature of forums. While Discord offers immediacy, it falls short when we consider long-term knowledge retention. Forums allow both the problem and its solution to be documented for future reference, benefiting the wider community and even the original poster should they encounter the same issue again. Digging through past Discord conversations can often be cumbersome and inefficient.

You're right about the increasing shift towards mobile usage. That's precisely why we've tailored our forum for a mobile-friendly experience. Your post from a mobile device is a testament to its functionality. However, we're always striving to enhance the user experience. If you have specific suggestions for improvements, both I and @splicho are all ears.

We value feedback like yours as it helps us grow and better cater to our community's needs. Please continue to share your thoughts, and if you have any suggestions, kindly post them in the relevant sections.
