Making a home server

I've been interested in making a home server for things like Plex and hosting my own Minecraft, Valheim, and other game servers. I'm not too thrilled about spending $1,000 USD but I'm not seeing anything else.

Does anyone have some suggestions on how to cut the price down?

That's the question I've been struggling with, to be honest. I know it may be a little overkill for what I want to do.

I want to host local development and beta sites for customers (web and software development ), host game servers for friends only (Minecraft, Valheim, other games), and do plex hosting. Maybe host a discord bot or two. I know I will need additional storage for Plex and long term.

Honestly, It might not pay for itself this year or even next. but it will be worth it in the long-run. Plus you will maintain ultimate control over everything.

Yeah, I'm not too concerned about it paying for itself. Good thought though.

The main concern is that you will be exposing your home network to the outside world, it will be like having a target on your back so to speak. Im thinking of doing something similar when fiber becomes available where i live.
